How to Increase Your Confidence While Learning and Speaking English
How to Increase Your Confidence While Learning and Speaking EnglishLearning and speaking English is the single most important skill you can learn. It will put you at the forefront of your chosen career and is also an asset to building a strong and respected social and professional network. There are a number of strategies for learning and speaking English, but they all boil down to the fact that you have to apply yourself. There are many advantages to studying English, such as increased professional qualifications, a better understanding of the world and a higher job prospects. However, there are also some disadvantages, such as a lack of confidence in your ability to communicate effectively. One way to overcome these problems is to take a comprehensive approach, starting with a good vocabulary program.Using a variety of media in your daily life will help you to learn more about the language. You should become familiar with the use of the internet, in particular, social media, by read ing and listening to information that interests you.Another way to practice your English is by using tools to express yourself using the same language that you use in everyday life. This means for example that if you are having problems writing your email, you can use the same words that you use to write the letter 'A' to spell out the letters 'E'.An advantage of studying English, even before you need to speak it is that you will already have a good command of the written word. As you progress, you will gradually acquire the spoken word that will come with experience. Some languages teach their children that you speak the same language as they do, so the more you learn the more you will hear others speak the language you are studying. This reinforces the idea that if you speak another language fluently, you should be able to effectively communicate with them. Some even suggest that this could help you land a job.The bottom line is that there are many advantages to learning and speaki ng English, but there are also several disadvantages, including a lack of confidence in yourself. By using these simple strategies, you can build up the confidence you need in order to learn and speak English, with much greater success than you would have ever dreamed possible.

3 GMAT Strategies You Learned While in College
3 GMAT Strategies You Learned While in College For many prospective business school students, the GMAT is a fearsome enemy. If you lie awake in bed worrying about how you will prepare for this exam, fret no further. Instead, look to your college days the strategies you relied on to succeed in your college courses can now help you do your best on the GMAT. These are a few daily activities that can omprove your GMAT skills. Here are three examples: Strategy #1: Review your schedule and develop a plan Just as you reviewed each class syllabus at the beginning of the semester, determine what you must accomplish before your GMAT test date. How long do you have to study? A week? A month? Consider taking a diagnostic test to better gauge how far you are from your goal score. If your results are not as strong as you expected them to be, you may want to increase your allotted prep time. You should also be specific about when you plan to study, as sometime during the week is unlikely to lead to success. Block off a recurring time in your calendar to ensure your prep is consistent. (One- or two-hour sessions work especially well for retention.) When you reach the end of your block, stop. Let the material sink in so that you can build on it the next day. Like that French class you enrolled in during your sophomore year, you cannot review dozens of terms in one evening and expect to be fluent the following morning. Similarly, each GMAT study session should build on the previous one. Pace yourself. Take notes. Build on your knowledge over an adequate period of time. These tips can also help you reach your target GMAT score! Last, where will you prep for the GMAT? When you were living in the dorm, your room might have been satisfactory when it was quiet, but a more likely study option was the library. If you can, find a public or university library near you, and check out a study room if one is available. Strategy #2: Study truly Whether you would like to strengthen your grammar skills for the Sentence Correction section or practice basic arithmetic for Problem Solving, you are now ready to begin your prep. Aim to use your time wisely. Just like in college, there will be distractions that encourage your mind to wander, including friends, family, athletic events, etc. Do not allow these obstacles to hamper your progress. You can also draw on the methods you learned in your foundational courses. For example, if you need to hone your proficiency in the Quantitative portion of the GMAT, apply the skills that you sharpened in your algebra or statistics classes. Work through practice questions and check your answers, even if your responses were correct. Determine which approaches work best for you within the context of the GMAT. For example, if you are having trouble with Reading Comprehension questions, you might choose to utilize some of the techniques that saw you through your literature course. These are great free GMAT resourcesyou can use to help you study. Try to remember that just as your sociology midterm was only one part of college, the GMAT is only one step on your road to an MBA. You will not have to prep for it forever. Make it a short-term priority now so that you can achieve your long-term goals later. Strategy #3: Ask for help when you need it The GMAT is a difficult exam. If you are struggling with its content or your timing, do not be discouraged. When your classes were difficult in college, you may have spoken with your chemistry professor or formed a study group for your anthropology class. These same strategies for example, working with GMAT tutors are still effective now. A mentor or a tutor can help you develop your personal strengths and address your particular weaknesses, and they can often speak to the MBA experience as a whole. By applying these three college strategies, you can simplify your GMAT prep. These techniques will not only benefit you on the GMAT, they will also serve you well during the application process and throughout business school. You ultimately persevered with your undergraduate years. Let this one exam show you how preparation, persistence, and commitment can lead you to your future success.

The tutors on the site offer three types of private tutorials to help you learn some of the language: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials.Face-to-face tutorials are taught with one student and one tutor and tend to be the most cost-effective type of tutorial since every minute in the less on is spent focusing on you as the student. Additionally, the tutor will also be spending time outside of the lessons finding resources and planning the time they'll spend with you.Online tutorials are similar to the face-to-face tutorials but take place either on a call or via webcam. Since the tutor won't have the travel costs to worry about and can fit more students into their schedule as a result, these are usually cheaper than face-to-face tutorials. Finally, group tutorials are classes with one teacher or tutor and multiple students. However, with group tutorials, you and a group of friends (perhaps the people you'll be travelling to Taiwan with) can get in touch with a private tutor to plan lessons that you'll all attend together. These tend to be the cheapest per student per hour. Each different type of tutorial has its pros and cons and it's really up to you and your budget to decide how much you'll need to learn, how you want to learn, and what your budget is!

8 Things We Learned at CONARH 2015 - Useful Lessons for Expos
8 Things We Learned at CONARH 2015 - Useful Lessons for Expos We hope you enjoyed CONARH 2015 as much as we did! We learned a lot during the show, and had a few frustrating and funny things happen. We wanted to share our story of CONARH and what we learned. (Leia-o aqui em Português).1. Always double check flight itineraries. The LOI English team at CONARH 2015. Left to right, Paul, Adriana, Daniel, Hugo.Hugo Pacheco, a member of LOIâs CONARH team, sent me a Whatsapp at 07:28 on Friday, August 14, to let me know that he was in the lounge at Guarulhos airport, and that I could take my time getting to him. There was one problem. I was still 10,435 kilometers away in Whitefish, Montana, USA packing my bags. Hugoâs message scared me. Did I miss my flight? I ran to my computer and checked my itinerary, and confirmed for Hugo that he was 24 hours early.2. Murphyâs Law Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.I had a stop in Chicago before heading to Guarulhos. It was an overnight flight, which would give me all day Saturday, August 15 to enj oy São Paulo. As we boarded our plane, it started raining hard outside. Soon there was lightening and thunder. The flight was delayed and then cancelled. Hugo thought I was joking this time. I had to find a hotel in the outskirts of Chicago and catch a flight the next day at noon, which landed me in Guarulhos at 02:00. By the time I got into my apartment and in bed, it was 04:00. It was a good thing I planned on arriving a full day before CONARH.3. Have a planâ¦We planned a long time for our trip to CONARH, and spent a lot of money (for a small company) on a banner, an iPad podium, and two really nice giveaway prizes an AppleWatch and an iPad. I was 100 percent sure that 1,000s of people would flock to our stand and give us their emails once they learned about our prizes. 4. then burn the plan.Despite our plans, which we made having never done a trade show, people did not flock to our stand. In fact, people hardly looked at it. At first we thought it was because none of our banne rs mentioned the giveaway, so we had an enormous poster printed with the iPad and AppleWatch. It helped a little, but not much. I may be an Apple geek, but the people at CONARH didnât seem interested. We needed to change tactics completely.5. Get comfortable outside your comfort zone.Ultimately, the only way we made contact with customers was by approaching them and talking to them directly about what we offered. The four of us, Adriana Menoli, Daniel Madruga, Hugo and I are used to working behind computers all day, and had never done anything like this. Despite that, we all persevered, and by the end of the show everyone seemed comfortable approaching complete strangers to tell them about our English and Spanish classes. Our notes show that we spoke to more than 700 individuals at CONARH!6. How to beat Murphyâs Law.Things went wrong throughout the show. I locked several important things, including a medication that I need to take every night, in my hotel safe and forgot the com bination. Daniel and Adriana got really sick (but continued working hard anyways). Parts of our display were damaged and lost during the flight, and could not be used. The very first people I approached at CONARH to talk to about our product looked at me like I was crazy and said ânão.â Later we realized they were hearing impaired. Despite all these things, our team continued to work hard, and everything that went wrong eventually became a funny story we told.7. Expos are not easy! Before going to CONARH, I attended a webinar that warned not to let your team party too much the night before shows. This was never even close to a problem for us usually after dinner we were too tired to have more than 1 beer before bed. It never occurred to me that running a stand at a tradeshow all day would be exhausting work, but it was! At first I thought it was just me, because I was using Portuguese way more than I was accustomed to. But the rest of the LOI team, Hugo, Adriana and Daniel, ar e native Portuguese speakers, and they were all exhausted too. It takes a lot of focus and energy to spend a day explaining a product to people, and we felt it. 8. The show is the beginning. When the show was over, we had made a lot of new contacts that we were excited about, but we realized that, just like with our stand, we couldnât just sit back and wait for good things to happen now. The work of a exposition like CONARH takes place in the weeks and months after the show is over.
College Supports for Students with ADHD
College Supports for Students with ADHD If you are sending your teen off to college this August, now it the time to make sure that the proper ADHD supports will be in place when they arrive. Even though your teen is about to gain a great deal of independence, they will likely need help and encouragement to get their ADHD supports in place before college begins. Research campus services with your teen, and help them send emails and make phone calls if they need to schedule appointments. Aim to create a solid plan that covers each of these areas: Academic Accommodations: Think about the academic supports that your teen has accessed during high school. Did they have a 504 Plan, an individualized education plan (IEP), or an informal plan that allowed them to have things like extended time on tests or the ability to take exams in a separate room with no distractions? These accommodations and others are available to college students with ADHD who need them. In order to qualify, colleges require documented evidence of an ADHD diagnosis. At most schools, this means recent results from an evaluation that includes cognitive and achievement testing, as well as an assessment of ADHD symptoms and impairments. Often a signed letter from a pediatrician or psychiatrist is not sufficient. Contact the colleges learning support center to find out about their requirements. Also find out about other academic supports on campus, like tutoring services and writing centers. Encourage your teen to sign up for services when school starts rather tha n waiting until they are struggling. Its all about preventing academic problems before they happen. Medication management: If your teen takes medication to manage their ADHD, find out if the psychiatrists on-campus provide ADHD medication management services. Some colleges and universities require students to see doctors and psychiatrists off campus to have their ADHD medication prescriptions filled. Others require a diagnosis from an off-campus physician before they will begin prescribing medications. The campus medical center will be able to answer questions about the services provided on-campus, and will give referrals for off-campus providers if one is needed. Social Success. All college students, and especially those with ADHD, have more success socially when they join clubs and participate in extracurricular activities. Have casual conversations with your teen about the activities theyd like to participate in on campus. Encourage them to learn about the clubs and sports available at their school. Just dont take over and do the research for them unless they ask for your help (and even then, do the online research together)! Theyll be more likely to join if they feel like participating was their own idea and not something their mom or dad told them to do. Talk about Alcohol. My own research and that of my colleagues has shown that college students with ADHD are more likely to experience problems with alcohol on campus than students without ADHD. Even if students with ADHD drink the same amount of alcohol as their peers without ADHD, they are likely to experience greater negative consequences. Plus, if school is already difficult to manage with ADHD, adding alcohol to the mix is only going to make it harder. Make sure your teen knows the risks, and that their risks are greater because of their ADHD. If your teen isnt going to be receptive to this information coming from you, have them talk with another trusted family member who they look up to, or an older friend, or a therapist or teacher who they respect. Counseling services. If you think your child may have difficulty with the transition to college, help them preemptively schedule a few sessions at the schools counseling center. Counseling center therapists are experts when it comes to the college transition. If your child needs ongoing support, theyll be able to provide referrals to off-campus providers who specialize in ADHD. With proactive supports in place, your child can begin their college career on the right foot and help ensure four years of success. ABOUT DR. 10 Hints to Take the Mystery Out of Learning Grammar in a Foreign Language
10 Hints to Take the Mystery Out of Learning Grammar in a Foreign Language 10 Hints to Take the Mystery Out of Learning Grammar in a Foreign Language Grammar. Itâs a love-hate dynamic for many people.Mostly, itâs more hate than love.If most of us were asked to give a talk titled Grammar Tips 101â"using our native language as the focusâ"weâd probably try to find a way out of giving the speech. Wed wrack our brains for somethingâ"anythingâ"else to do.Root canal, anyone?Letâs face it, many of us cant explain the ins and outs of every grammar rule in our native language. Itâs the truth, right? So why would we get excited over dealing with grammar in a second language? It can even be a scary topicâ"an excuse, even, for considering not to attempt to learn a new foreign language. But wait right there! Giving grammar that much weightâ"the ability to dissuade us even the tiniest bit from learning a languageâ"is definitely not a good idea.Remember, when you learned your first language as a child, you knew nothing of grammar. You just started speaking and putting newly-learned words into use and eventually, you intuitively f igured out the rest along the way.At least at the beginning, you should start to learn a second language in much the same way. Language learning is an interactive, social endeavor and when you approach it that way, all things, including grammar, eventually fall into place.First, lets quickly define grammar and consider how important it really is. After that, Ill give you 10 great hints to help you get a grip on the ever-challenging grammar issue! Grammar, Defined for the Language LearnerMost of us have a vague idea of what exactly constitutes âgrammar,â but do you really know what it is?Fortunately, its pretty simple: Grammar is the system and framework of a language. Basically, itâs the way sentences are structured. It includes morphology and syntax.A bit fuzzy about those terms?Morphology is just the study of the forms of words. And syntax?Itâs a fancy name for the way we arrange words and phrases in order to construct concise, well-formed sentences. If that all sounds si mple and straightforward, thats the idea. Dont lose yourself in complex, linguistic definitions when it comes to grammar and its many nuances. For the language learner, a simple understanding of what grammar is, and what its main function is, should be more than enough. When to Address the Grammatical Elephant in the RoomIt has been suggested that grammar shouldnt be the top priority when learning a language. That school of thought suggests that we should invest time in speaking, reading and learning before putting energy into memorizing grammar rules. In other words: Learn, converse and make mistakes first, and then address any grammar issues as they arise.Even when you use the hints in this post, youâll still have a few grammar bumps. Take them as they come and look for a hint that will help get you over the bumpy parts! Most issues sort themselves out naturally, so just keep at it!How, then, to sufficiently master grammar without losing hope and giving up?10 Hints to Take the Myst ery Out of Learning Grammar in a Foreign Language1. Master the Basics Before GrammarYour first hint?A simple one: When basic skills are mastered, address grammar. But not before then.Get your feet under you and feel comfortable with this new adventure. Donât stress about grammar until youâve got a grip on the so-called basic skills of listening, repeating and understanding some of the new language. How to get the basics under your belt? Time and effort. Put in time to listen, pause, repeat and listen some more. If you dont understand something, go back and either redo a lesson, read a chapter over again or find another method (like a video or graded reader) to reinforce the rudimentary aspects of the new language.2. Come to OrderNumber two?Pay attention to word order.By speaking, reading and listening, language construction will become moderately apparent. For example, word order, gender assignations and article placement can all be gleaned through basic study without particular attention to âgrammarâ per se.At first, just make mental notes of how words appear in sentences. Try to pick up on general patterns, without consulting a grammar book for the specific rules that dictate them. Youâll be surprised by how much youâre learning, without busting your brain cells.3. Grab Your Gear! The third hint is almost too obvious, but itâs important.Assemble your grammar gear. You wouldnât try to fix a leaky pipe without a wrench, would you?Getting any job done requires the right tools! So donât try to learn a language without a good dictionary and conjugation resources. All are readily available online or for free in libraries so thereâs no excuse for not having what you need. For example, ECTACO is a free online multi-language dictionary thats very handy for a quick reference in any of more than two dozen languages! If youre into e-books, which can be super convenient for language learners and eliminate the tedium of flipping through endless pages to f ind what youre looking for, check out the quality (and less expensive) grammar books and dictionaries available for a variety of languages on VitalSource. Their Bookshelf app is a convenient way to access and read any of your learning material whenever you need it.4. Keep Materials HandyNumber four goes along with number three in that you should always have your resources at hand! Its easy to find the answer to a question when everything is at your fingertips.Use a mobile translation app and youâll never wonder what something means or if youâre using a phrase correctly. Some of them can demystify text, websites and conversations in over 100 languages.5. Settle In and Watch VideosThe fifth hint is one of my favorites: Watch videos!Thatâs right, videos are part of your grammar demystification kit. Thereâs definitely no need to tell me twice to do this one!Hearing a language gives a learner the ability to catch the cadence and nuances of the spoken word. Also, hearing mor phology and syntax in action definitely beats reading about it in a book!Videos about verb conjugation and other grammar topics are also available on YouTube in many languages. Itâs well worth your time to check out whats available in your language, such as:Spanish â" The Spanish Dude uses his channel to dig deep into Spanish verb conjugations and other vital grammar topics, and he does so with personality, engaging visuals, real-world topics and loads of humor.French â" Learn French with Vincent is a channel designed for learners at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Vincent is a fun host but the lessons are often demanding and set up in a progressive manner that brings skills to new levels in a logical order.German â" Deutsch für Euch is geared toward native English speakers. Its focus is on explaining grammar so this one is a huge asset to the grammar learning kit.Italian â" Torre di Babele has been in operation since 1984 and is a language school authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education. Its Italian language courses are filled with informative culture tidbits, reviews about events in and around Rome and wine-tasting tips. Theres something for everyone on this channel.Japanese â" Learn Japanese From Zero! is a YouTube channel that can either be used in conjunction with the online Japanese From Zero! books and course or on its own. The host is a guy named George whos witty and engaging and who explains the language in small steps that make it easy to learn. He even brings his cat to some of the lessons!Chinese â" AskBenny is not a new series but its still very useful. Benny tackles necessary subjects including food, weather and other basic concepts. His sense of humor translates well and the videos are short, entertaining clips.English â" Anglo-Link covers all aspects of English language learning and puts an emphasis on building confidence through increased fluency. The 650-million-plus views say it all: This channel do es a good job and keeps learners coming back. And itâs a snap to locate similar resources for almost any other language, too.6. Fit Practice into Every Part of Your DaySorry, but the sixth hint isnât as exciting as number five wasâ"although it is essential.Practice. Thatâs it. The hint is practice, practice, practice! In the car or at home alone? Speak aloud. Or sing. No one can hear you, so dont keep the volume down, either!Waiting in line at the grocery store? Whip out your phone, pull up a translation app and pop in a few words. Memorize them before its your turn to check out.Challenge yourself to recall the last lesson you worked on without referring back to it. Practice pulling the information from your mind. Its in there, you just have to work on getting it front and center.Thereâs no substitute for a good practice session. Use the language daily. Repetition simply drills the basic rules into our heads through usage.7. Dont Forget the Written WordHint number seven i s found on the written page. You guessed itâ"reading is a perfect way to conquer grammar. Why? Quite simply, reading gives you examples of grammar rules in action. Seeing the rules used in black and white really puts the focus on what youâve already absorbed. There are books in all genres and with something to appeal to every taste, available online and through libraries.Have you always wanted to read the classics? Download a few and give it a go.Looking for something less taxing to your brain? Why not start with some childrens literature? This site has a wide array of childrens literature in many languages. An added bonus is seeing translation on the same screen as the English version, so if youre stuck on a word all youve got to do is glance over to see its meaning.Find something that interests you, find a quiet corner and start reading. Youâll be glad you did when you realize youâve absorbed a great deal with very little effort.8. Cinema, Anyone? The eighth hint is another o ne that I love!Go to the movies! Grab some popcorn and your beverage of choice, and sit in a movie theater for a couple of hours. Hearing a language spoken illustrates proper word placement. We learn by example!9. Grab Your Paper and PencilNumber nine may seem tough for some but if you apply yourself, this one gets easier. What is it?Write!I canât emphasize the importance of this hint enough! This one goes along with the speaking and reading hintsâ"writing is one of the best ways to reinforce what weâre learning!Implementing all the skills youâve already learned will solidify rules. Writing helps so much so even if you struggle in the beginning, keep at it. Eventually it will become second nature, as it did with your native language.Something I do on a regular basis is to keep a journal in a foreign language. I know it sounds daunting but honestly it isnt. Its great practice and I often surprise myself by knowing more vocabulary than I realized. Why not give it a try? Youve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. And hey, youll end up with a journal that reads like a foreign novel! If journaling isnt your thing, why not start a blog? Blogs can either be private or public, but I suggest going public. After all, you probably have a lot to offer readers. And knowing that other sets of eyes will be perusing your words is a built-in incentive to do your best work.Make a commitment to post every day, or at least every other day, and youre almost guaranteed to step up those grammar and writing skills.10. Time to Play!Think youâre on the grammar trail and gaining momentum, but maybe youâve still got some grammar jitters? Thatâs fine because weâve got a final hint thats sure to get you past any lingering doubts. Now for the biggie, the tenth hint to taking the mystery out of a foreign language. Ready?Drum roll, pleaseâ¦Make grammar a game.Yes, a game!Itâs almost inevitable that when we have fun, we learn more easily. Without the pressure of needing to learn, playtime becomes one of the best teaching devices. So bring some excitement to the language learning table! Laugh, compete and play like youâre a kid! Itâs all good because when you learn, you winâ"thereâs no losing here, friends!Download some apps or gamesâ"even if theyâre not designed to teach grammar skills, playing and seeing language in motion reinforces the lessons youâve learned. Two of my favorites are the FluentU app for iOS and Android and Duolingo. I haveâ"and useâ"both.Final Words on Grammar: A Necessary Part of Any Language Learning EndeavorAdmit it, we all have things weâd rather not do. For some of us, grammar is on that list. But without learning grammar rules and being able to apply them, its unlikely well become fully fluent in a languageâ"and fluency is really what weâre all looking for, isnât it?Communication without grammatical correctness is possible, but is it optimal? No, itâs not!We all want to hit the top of our abilities in a new language, and it takes some work to reach that goal.Mystery Solved!Remember, grammar does come eventually when your language skills deepen.Donât sweat it if you donât get the right verb tense every single timeâ"language learning is a process and a journey thatâs meant to be enjoyed. Its OK to make mistakesâ"just try to learn from them.Hopefully these hints have dispelled most of the mystery and difficulties most often attributed to grammar.Follow the tips and before you realize it, the only mystery surrounding your language learning will be deciding which language to tackle next. After all, now that youâve got these 10 terrific hints to solving the grammar mystery, thereâs no reason you canât learn any language, is there?Happy learning!
